Participating in Ice Skating Competitions can be a lot of fun. The disciplines of Figure Skating are some of the few Olympic sports which give the participants the opportunity to be expressive, individual and stylish while being athletic and sporty.

But don’t let the sparkly veneer fool you, all disciplines of Figure Skating are highly competitive.

Below are some important facts about entering your first competition.

Know your standard

It is important to enter the correct category for your standard and age.

If you have any doubts about which category you should enter in a competition show the entry form to your coach and ask their advice.

Prepare well

Preparation is everything.

Practice as much as you can to be ready for the event.

Make sure you have your outfit ready.

Check your equipment, tighten any loose screws, make sure blades are not blunt (if unsure, check with your coach).

Spare laces are a wise investment, always have a pair in your skate bag. (And for girls, a spare pair of tights)

Send in your form

Mail your entry form as soon as you can, as places in most competitions are on a first come first served basis.

If your entry is successful you will receive notification.

If your entry was not successful you may be on the reserve list. This would mean you would be offered a place in the event if someone else withdraws prior to the competition day.

Either way, you should let your coach know so they can help you to prepare.
